The best hours are offshore.
Sosúa bay flattens to glass by mid-morning. Catamarans run the reef with an open bar and a BBQ on deck, the party boats push it louder and later, and the quiet sails just find an empty cove and drop anchor. Bring reef-safe sunscreen and not much else.
Rum, coffee, cacao, repeat.
The safari trucks stop where the flavour is: a family finca pressing sugarcane, a shed drying cacao into raw chocolate, a bar pouring Brugal straight from the barrel. Come hungry, and a little thirsty.
The wildlife will find you.
Squirrel monkeys that land on your shoulders at Monkeyland, dolphins and sea lions at Ocean World, a horse picking its way along an empty stretch of beach. The gentlest way to spend a morning on the coast.
The old town rewards a slow morning.
Gingerbread mansions in ice-cream colours, the Fortaleza San Felipe guarding the harbour mouth, some of the clearest amber in the world under glass at the museum, and the cable car climbing Mount Isabel to the Christ statue and the whole bay below. A good guide ties it together in half a day.
